Hi, this is Piston Kirk to show you how to remove the rear nameplate on a 986 Boxster Two reasons can incite you to replace this nameplate The first and more frequent is that because of numerous car washes the paint finishes by wearing out the second concerns those who feel that their black nameplate should be replaced by a Titane version Obviously the black version is ok on a clear paintjob be it white, yellow or light gray However on a black paint it is hardly visible That prompt me to replace mine so lets go As we will need to use a heat gun and that the rear spoiler is of plastic we need to isolate it with a wood board It may not be necessary as normally these plastic resist high temperatures but lets play it safe So as to soften the glue using a heat gun we gently warm up the nameplate then with a fishing line introduce it under the nameplate which will normally cut out the foam which fastens the nameplate to the body So as to remove what remains of the foam on the body. use an adhesif remover made for cars After a few minutes the liquid will have absorbed by the foam so you may remove it with your fingure nails. In some case you may have to use a plastic scraper which if often needed in such situations. But be careful as this tool may leave slight scatches. This may be tedious and you may have to use the adhesive thiner several times until nothing is left. But be careful let some traces, because you will have to reposition the logo in the same place. On an old painting, this is not a problem, there will always be marks, even when you clean it thoroughly. On the other hand with a new paint no markings will be visible to guide you to correctly position the new plate so you must use some masking tape to indicate the right position when you install the new inscription. The masking tape should indicate both ends of the position. Start by cleaning the foam at one end and when this is done place the masking tape then proceed the same way on the other end. Once this is done you go on to clean the center be attentive to obtain a very clean surface so as tha new nameplate will stick correctly in place. This is a tricky job as the positionning of the nameplate must be correct the first time there is no going back but guided by the masking tape this should not be a problem start from one end then position the namplate on the body taking care not to apply any pressure until the porition is satisfactory then you may push firmly. Now lets take the wood board out and verify that the new nameplate has adhered well. Compare the result between the old and the new. Somewhat better no? It was fairely simple work most people can do. To conclude here is a thought you have more choice that the Titane color there exist a chrome version. But some purists will say that the chrome version was not used by Porsche on the 986 (except the Speedster). Which is true. But it must be acknowledged that it greatly modernizes the appearance of the car. So after all it is your choice. See you soon!
