Korea’s trademark applications for eco-friendly vehicles surged 48% in 2016: KIPO

With Korean consumers increasingly aware of,
and concerned about, environmental issues such as fine dust pollutants in the air we
breathe,… data suggest a jump in interest in electric and hybrid vehicles. According to the Korean Intellectual Property
Office, last year the number of trademark applications for such vehicles surged 48 percent
from the year before… to 1-hundred-48. The figure’s been rising steadily over the
past five years by an annual average of 36 percent. The highest number of applications for both
electric and hybrid trademarks comes from Korea’s number-one automaker, Hyundai Motor. The increased interest in eco-friendly cars
is attributed to Korea’s tightened environmental regulations… and also various benefits and
subsidies provided to consumers who buy them.
